Invitational Model Intervention

The Invitational model is similar to the systemic model only because it has a focus on the family system and the importance of it changing, however the Invitational model gives most of the control to the addict or alcoholic and allows them to determine most of the treatment plan. Because addicts and alcoholics almost always choose the easiest path possible, they always start off with a treatment plan that is simple and sure to fail. The Invitational model intervention begins with the family, the interventionist and the substance abuser discussing together what the treatment plan should be and then as the addict or alcoholic attempts and fails with these options such as outpatient, a local therapist or psychiatrist and twelve step meetings, the Invitational model intervention counselor is continuously re-engaged to discuss the next level of treatment that should have been discussed the first time. It is thought by many that the Invitational model of intervention is financially motivated because it keeps the intervention counselor constantly engaged with every failure of your loved one. Some Invitational intervention counselors charge between $10,000 and $20,000 for an intervention which is in the opinion of many to be an insult to the intervention industry. The Invitational model of intervention for addiction has some good points, however it should never take an intervention counselor weeks to get your loved one into treatment and it should never cost $10,000 to $20,000. I was asked one time by a group of professionals if I ever used the Invitational model of intervention and my answer was “YES, Twice”. One time the addict did not show up to the intervention and the other time the addict showed up with a loaded firearm. When these same professionals asked what I thought of the Invitational model of intervention for addiction, I responded by telling them that when law enforcement agents start telling people ahead of time that they are coming with arrest warrants then I would notify the addict or alcoholic that we are coming with an intervention to send them to treatment.
