A domain name is part of your online identity. It should be easy to remember. Some domain names that you probably know well include Change.org, Apple.com and Google.com.
Choosing a domain name is a thoughtful process. This is how others will come to know your website – and your brand. People who have your domain can enter it into the browser’s address bar. Others will discover your URL through the search engines.
The best person to pick the name for your domain is YOU! Below I share some of my favorite tips for choosing a domain name that rocks!
Make it Unique
Some domains are easy to create. A business like Walmart or Amazon didn’t have much thinking to do. Their companies were well-established and known by many. For other businesses, choosing a domain is a bit trickier.
It’s possible that there are other domains similar to your business name. If this is the case, think outside the box. The last thing you want is to forever be confused with a similar-sounding domain name. Also, don’t choose misspelled or plural versions of a popular domain.
Aim for Short and Sweet
While it’s important to be unique, you don’t want to accomplish this by creating a super long domain name. The more letters you have, the greater the chance for misspellings and mistypings. If you come up with something you really like, look for ways to shorten it. For example, the winemaker Treasury Wine Estates shortened their domain to www.tweglobal.com.
Include Keywords
If it makes sense, try using keywords in your domain that pertain to the products and services you offer. This makes sense to your customers and helps improve search engine rankings. A pool repair company may choose poolrepair.com. You can even add your target area to the domain such as Seattlepoolrepair.com.
Avoid Using Hyphens and Numbers
Numbers and hyphens are best avoided because they can add confusion. People might not know if “one” is spelled out or written as a number. However, if your company name is Five Guys Pool Repair, it’s hard to leave out the “five” part of the name. In this case, it’s best to register the different variations of your business name.
Be Careful of Trademarks
Another thing you’ll want to avoid is trademark or copyright problems. If you come up with a domain name that you love, do some research first. Look up your potential domain name at uspto.gov/trademarks. Better safe than sorry!
When you have finally chosen a domain name, you can register it. This will be your name for many, many years, so you should be happy with it. For assistance with choosing a domain name that is cool, memorable and 100 percent yours, call Magna Technology today!
